Forgive Me Father has a simple premise and that is simply you being one of the few people left with your senses. You can pick between two characters the Priest and the Journalist each with their own unique skills to upgrade as you blast your way through Pestisville trying to get to the bottom of what has happened.
Gameplay wise Forgive Me Father is fast and frantic which works well with the more spacious levels as you do get a chance to breath, even with the smaller cramped maze like levels I found the pace to be fine and it gives you a more tense experience as well you have no where to hide as such, gameplay wise this isn’t really any different from what has already been done before other than the added madness function which the idea of the mechanic is you kill the enemies madness increases and the colour on the screen will deplete and your attacks are stronger for a short while. There are numerous weapons to use some I found more fun to use than others, but I really enjoyed the double barrell shotgun and its upgrade if you choose to upgrade it.
The levels in general are well put together often you are having to find various coloured keys to open the next part of the level so there is a bit of back tracking, but it doesn’t feel like a chore either. There are plenty of arenas where waves of enemies will spawn to keep you on your toes.
Checkpoints are few and far between which is an annoyance especially if playing on the harder difficulty settings because you will die and you will have to replay large parts of the level again so when you see the hobo make sure you save your game and not just run on past like I did numerous times.
Graphically I absolutely love this game the comic book aesthetic mixed with the Lovecraftian horror theme is perfectly put together, when exploring you will see in true comic book form text pop ups when you shoot an enemy or points of interest.
Forgive Me Father is another FPS in the revival of the Retro FPS genre but manages to stand out from others in the genre with the bold artistic choice of opting for a comic book aesthetic with a healthy splash of Lovecraftian horror.
In conclusion Forgive Me Father is a solid entry into the retro FPS revival genre I had a great time playing this game and I look forward to diving into the sequel Forgive Me Father 2.
