I originally wrote a little piece on the demo for Captain Wayne, and I ended that optimistic for the full game and I was not disappointed.
The title of the review says it all really this game was pure fun filled Mayhem of the highest order; you play as Captain Wayne a pirate with a shotgun for an arm on a mission.
Captain Wayne has an unexpected run in with some mercenaries called the Killer Whales which leaves him marooned on Orca Isle with his ship the S.S. Salty stolen which leaves you to do what Wayne does best and that’s destroy everyone. The story is given to you via cutscenes and with the voice delivered with humour, Wayne reminding me a little of Duke Nukem and Johnny Bravo.
The gameplay for me exceptional it is fast and fluid and most importantly fun, to cover fast distances at speed you will need to use Waynes kick which is also a great alternative to the stand mele attack, I found the controls to be tight and responsive.
Graphically Ciaran Games LLC went for a cartoon look which sets the game apart from quite a few other GZDoom games which are usually dark and gloomy (nothing wrong with that mind.)
There is a good variety of enemies some of which wielding shotguns, rocket launchers, machine guns, boxing gloves and then some flying squids, bats and some strange explosive type thing and some kamikaze birds, and an enemy that likes to throw bricks at you and another that likes to scratch the living hell out of you. There are some boss type enemies one of which reminds me of the Juggernaut and another that reminds me of Wreck-it Ralph. The boss battles are fun, and you need to be constantly on the move just like Doom.
The level design is excellent with plenty of scope for exploration as you need to find various keys and press various buttons to progress through the levels and of course what boomer shooter would be complete without secrets and there are a decent amount of them to find. One of my favourite levels is the 2nd level where you are running around the beach and enter the hotel and kill everything that moves, and you get your first mini boss I wont say more as I do not want to spoil it for you.
It took me around 4.5 hours to finish the campaign but that is not where the game ends once you have watched the end credits roll you are treated to another cut scene and a new mode to play called Riptide Rampage, this mode you have to kill wave after wave of killer whales across 6 maps in order to achieve a high score. You can score by picking up treasure and earning a good combo and by clearing certain objectives in the waves for bonuses. I will find myself playing this mode for quite some time as I find this game to be so addictive and I want that high score.
In conclusion Captain Wayne is a superb game that is a must play for any boomer shooter fan and I have had such a great time playing this game and I look forward to another game if they are to make one (Which they had better make a new one) Also the cost of the game is £6.74 which is an absolute steal in my opinion and I had more fun playing this game then I did Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6.
Score: 10/10 – And right up there for being one of my games of the year.
