For many years we have been waiting for a game to come along to fill the whole that has been left behind by Duke Nukem especially after that disaster from Gear Box.

I am happy to say I think we now have a game worthy of taking up the mantle of being the next Duke Nukem, but me calling it the next Duke Nukem is a bit of a disservice to the game as the game stands out on his own.

The game has two protagonists you play the bulk of the game as John and when the story progresses there will be times you play as Dog. The story is a nice simple story what more could you want from a game of this type of genre. Luzilian the Antagonist is an alien known as the reptoids who takes over worlds by crypto mining and it’s your job to stop him from taking over your world and experimenting on humans. There is an enemy on there is a proper nod to the Pig cop in Duke Nukem they also have the squeal.

The gameplay is just what you expect from a Boomer Shooter, fast and full of enemies to obliterate with a variety of weapons or environmental hazards as you hunt down keys to open doors or find hand readers to open up areas that have been closed off to you by a force field. The level design is top notch you can’t get lost which is great but there is plenty of exploration and secrets to find I’m not going to tell you what they are and who cameos in the game as that will just spoil the fun.

The developers make several nods to the games that really paved the way for this genre in particular on one of the levels you will come across a roof top that is all too familiar and it brought a smile to my face, and a level inside of a level later on the game which for me is one of the most iconic levels in the history of the FPS and from my all time favourite game.

The weapons are fun to use and really pack a punch I really liked using the minigun and the double-barrelled shotgun.  There are a few vehicles that you are forced to use for some parts of the game but still fun to use and they control well.

There are a lot of variety to the levels some of are large outdoor areas that go onto massive office blocks or a space station to roof tops.

The Boss battles are great fun and on higher difficulty settings really offer a satisfying challenge.

There are also 35 achievements for all you achievement hunters out there as well. Whether more will be added once the full release is out, I do not know.

I had a right blast with this game I could not stop smiling all the way through my playthrough with all the nods to some of my all-time favourite games done in a way that doesn’t cheapen the experience the humour is also spot on.

In my opinion this is arguably one of the best boomer shooters that I have played, and it is one that should be in your library’s.

I am really looking forward to seeing OldSchool Law Team does next with Brutal John 2.

9/10 is the score I will give this game.
